    This patient, a 55 year old woman, was in for a routine screening. She presented with no symptoms. This large pedunculated polyp was found and removed by snare. Surgery was not required.

    This diverticula was found in a patient, a 55 year old physician, who was in for a routine screening. The sigmoid colon is the most common location of diverticula.

    This 16 year old patient presented with rectal urgency, blood in the stool and frequent, small, loose bowel movements. The patient has ulcerative colitis involving only the rectum (proctitis). He was treated with medication and his symptoms resolved.

  • Diverticulosis
    Many people have small pouches in their colons that bulge outward through weak spots. Each pouch is called a diverticulum. Pouches (plural) are called diverticula. The condition of having diverticula is called diverticulosis. About half of all Americans age 60 to 80, and almost everyone over age 80, have diverticulosis.When the pouches become infected or inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis.

    This patient became ill after eating food contaminated with the bacteria called E. coli 0157:H7. Foodborne illness results from eating food contaminated with bacteria (or their toxins) or other pathogens such as parasites or viruses. In some people, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) can result from infection by E. coli O157:H7, and can lead to kidney failure and death.

    This patient was found to have polyps during a routine colonoscopy. The polyps were removed, along with the threat of them becoming cancerous.

    Endoscopic Polypectomy is routinely performed when polyps are found. In this photo, the polyp is grasped by a snare and is then removed, along with the threat of it developing into cancer.

    A polyp is a growth that shouldn't be there. Screening for polyps and colorectal cancer is so important. People with polyps usually don't have symptoms. Screening saves lives. When polyps are found they are removed eliminating the threat of them developing into cancer.
