The Esophagus

EsophagusThe major function of the esophagus is to transport food from the mouth to the stomach while preventing retrograde movement of gastric contents. It is a hollow muscular tube that is closed at the top by the upper esophageal sphincter and at the bottom by the lower esophageal sphincter.

Esophagus Detail

Lower Esophageal Sphincter

This is a 3.0 to 4.0 cm zone of high intraluminal pressure at the gastroesophageal junction. Food and liquid enter the stomach during relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. The lower esophageal sphincter prevents reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus.
